Martino Gamper; Total Trattoria

I love this project. Martino Gamper is an incredibly talented and inventive furniture designer and in 2008, instead of having some dry presentation of his latest designs, he opened a trattoria in the Aram Gallery in London. He designed EVERYTHING. All the chairs, tables, candle-holders, light fixtures, coasters, glasses - even the kitchen! The 30 guests were then invited to dine in this wonderful space; sharing a meal and toasting to Martino's talent. Bene!

I'm very excited for this exhibition opening in June at the Museum of Art and Design here in New York. It will be featuring the work of German photographer Frank Kunert who documents the most incredible "small worlds" of his own creation.

I love how these two illustrators are really pushing what "illustration" can encompass. Beyond even the ever-popular paper-cutting techniques, MaricorMaricar and Alexandra Bruel use needlepoint and modeling clay to realize their designs. They're both represented by my favorite British illustration agency, Han dsome Frank. Their whole roster is really worth perusing.

New Mexico native Elisheva Biernoff investigates how humans encounter and interact with fantasy and fictional spaces through installation, painting and collage. I love the piece where layers of stripped-back wallpaper are mimicked by actually painstakingly painting the designs on the walls of her installation space.

Panel Prototype

The design for my panel layouts has been finalized. Each of the 180 panels will have a slightly different color combination and the floral pattern will be 1 of 4 that I have designed.

New Studio!

At the beginning of the month I moved into my new space which is run by the not-for-profit arts organization, Chashama. It's in this incredible building in Gowanus/Sunset Park. It was an old Army Terminal building and is this huge concrete structure.
The panels have started being assembled, 60 primed and painted, 120 more to go!
NB: excuse the phone photos! eek!

Replanting the Garden

Early next month I'm going to be part of a group exhibition curated by Richard Saja called Replanting the Garden. It is an exhibition drawing visual inspiration from Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights. It opens on May 7th at Big Car Gallery in Indianapolis.
Below are the two Floral Reflections pieces I just mailed off yesterday - digital prints with hand coloring on Arches.

Last weekend I took the bus to Philly to be a part of the Printeresting Print Swap. It was held at the Print Centre and was SO much fun. All the other participants had such amazing work, I came home with quite a swag of printed goodness. There are some photos of the event itself here on the Printeresting site. And below are some of the pieces I took down to swap - they're studies front a new body of work I've begun that draws from the shapes of gemstones.

I really love these oil paintings from Silke Schoener. They sections of the landscape that are left out are just as interesting as those that are actually painted.

Brooklyn Arts Council Regrant

I was excited to find out last month was I was successful in my application for a special project grant from the Brooklyn Arts Council. The grant will help me fund a solo exhibition later in the year. Over the next few weeks, I will start sharing some of the inspiration behind my next project, I is for Pulsating Flowers.

Silvermine Guild Art Centre

I found out today I've had three of my prints selected in the Juried Print Americas Triennial at the Silvermine Art Centre in New Canaan, CT. The show will open November 22 and I'll include photos from it then. Very excited!

This Sunday I was included on ABC's Sunday Arts Program that was looking at the graduate shows put on by Australian art schools. My first time on TV and I wasn't in the country to see it! Mum said I got in a good 15 seconds, hopefully they'll post the video on their website shortly and I can pass it on. They used my work on the website too!

Visual Notes on Synaesthesia

Above are images from the final body of work for my Honours assessment. The whole installation is inspired by synaesthesia, a neurological condition that results in the combining of senses; one can smell sounds or taste shapes. The condition affects every facet of life for those who experience it, and my aim was to create an environment where every element was similarly affected by colour and shape.
